Twisted Tree Trunk

Okay, this is a two-parter.

First, do you know what this is?

Second, can you explain how it got so twisted?

    I think I know - there was a vine twisted around it and then either it died or was removed.

    Shanna, thanks. I'm just so besotted with Austin that I want to share my exploration of it. Austin's special.

    About the twisted thing, I know what it is (I took the photo, after all). The mystery for me is what happened to it to produce this corkscrew shape.
